Top Kenyan Trends on Monday, July 15, 2019

As is usually the case, Kenyans on Monday were at it again having a field day on social media. Most of them weighed in on the hot trending topics of the day including:

Dennis Okari's meat  exposé

Following an exposé by NTV's Dennis Okari of how rogue supermarkets use chemicals to increase the shelf life of products, putting at risk the lives of millions of lives, Kenyans took to social media to share their thoughts.

While a majority of Kenyans reacted with shock and outrage, others chose to make light of the situation.

Dubbed #RedAlert, the exposé revealed how supermarkets have been killing Kenyans slowly by injecting their meat with excess amounts of Sodium Metabisulfite, to increase its shelf life.

Samples taken from several supermarkets in the city contained shocking amounts of Sodium Metabisulfite which are known to cause asthma, allergy and even some types of cancers.

The chemical is so corrosive that the supermarket staff handling the meat have to wear protective gloves due to its harsh effects on the hands.

“The chemical can be corrosive to the skin and irritating to the eye so we have to cover ourselves,” a supermarket staff confessed.

The chemical is also used to preserve chips to look fresh and attract customers.

Clearly, despite these shocking revelations, Kenyans seem to understand that laughter is healthy and is one of the cheapest alternatives of relieving, managing and dealing with stress and disappointments.

Here is how Kenyans made fun after Okari’s meat exposé:

Jay- Z & Beyonce Knowles

Kenyans on Monday morning could not help but get excited after noticing pictures music power couple Jay Z and Beyonce Knowles standing in front of the Magical Kenya logo.

The logo appeared on the yellow banner that was the background of almost every photo from the London premiere of the 2019 Disney classic remake, which happened on Sunday night July 14, 2019, in London.

Many social media users went ahead to praise the Magical Kenya team for the good job of identifying the perfect way of putting the country on the map by sponsoring the movie premiere.

According to the National Geographic, the much-anticipated film was inspired by the Hell’s Gate National Park in the Great Rift Valley, Naivasha, which is known for its scenic sights, wildlife, rock climbing, cycling and the home of the real ‘Pride Rock’ in the film.

The event was attended by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, legendary Brit singer Sir Elton John, Canadian actor Seth Rogen and American artist Pharell Williams among many others.

Beyonce will play a role in the movie as the voice of the character Nala.

The 2019 Lion King remake is set to officially premiere on the July 19th, 2019.

Afcon Algeria Vs Senegal finals

The ongoing 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations got closer to its peak on July 14 after the advancement of both Algeria and Senegal to the finals.

Kenyans on social media could not help but express appreciation for Harambee Stars’ efforts, who had been pooled alongside Algeria and Senegal in Group C.

Despite the national team bowing out of the tournament in the group stage, losing to both, Kenyans felt a renewed sense of entitlement, boasting that they had ‘finished third’ in the same group with the finalists.

Senegal sealed a win 1-0 over Tunisia in the extra time at the 30 June Stadium to reach the AFCON final for the first time in 17 years.

Algeria, on the other hand, reached its first AFCON final since 1990 when they lifted their first and only Nations Cup trophy.

The tournament, which started on June 21, is scheduled to end on Friday, July 19, 2019.

Malkia Strikers

Malkia Strikers, Kenya’s Women Volleyball National Team, was also on the trending list after they lost in the Africa Women Volleyball National Championship.

Cameroon dashed Malkia's hopes of reclaiming the title by winning 3-2 in an exhilarating final played in Cairo, Egypt on Sunday, July 14, 2019.

This was the second meeting between these two sides in the competition with Malkia having won by a similar margin when they played in the group stages.

Quincy Timberlake

Quincy Timberlake, the husband of former KTN news anchor, Esther Arunga, was also among the trending topics of the day after the latter confessed to lying about the circumstances that led to the death of her son, Sinclair Timberlake, in June 2014.

According to reports by Australian media houses, Prosecutor Danny Boyle established that the boy died as a result of blunt force trauma to his abdomen.

Boyle told the court that Esther's husband grabbed a Bible and announced "there's a devil in his stomach I have to get it out" before proceeding to unleash violence on the boy.

Timberlake, was on Monday charged with the murder of the three-year-old boy with his mother Esther Timberlake pleading guilty to being an accessory to the murder.

Arunga, 38, is now set to be sentenced on Thursday, according to the publication.

Supreme Court

Governors, on Monday, forced their way into the Supreme Court buildings, to submit a petition.

Led by Council of Governors Chairperson, Wycliffe Oparanya, they marched together in solidarity, chanting protest songs.

Other governors who were part of the procession included Mwangi wa Iria (Murang'a), Martin Wambora (Embu), Anyang' Nyong'o (Kisumu), Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni) among others.

MCAs from various counties were also present.

The county bosses are seeking to compel parliament to pass the Division of Revenue Allocation Bill 2019, which stipulates how money should be disbursed to counties.
