An Indian national was, on Wednesday, arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for lying to police that he had been robbed at gunpoint.
The foreigner, Jaydeep Rajeshkumar Thanki, allegedly claimed that he had been robbed of Ksh 10.5 million while driving along Prof Wangari Maathai Road.
It is said that Thanki told the police that he was flagged by a motorcyclist and his passenger but when he stopped, they brandished a pistol and demanded him to surrender a bag that he had in his car.
He added that the gunmen sped off towards Pangani after the incident.
Thanki, who works at Kenmatch East Africa Ltd, claimed the stolen money had been collected from his clients, who were paying for supplies.
Police indicated that Thanki reported the incident two hours after it had allegedly happened.
“Investigations commenced immediately upon receiving the report and it was established that the suspect only collected Sh3.25 million which he banked.
The other remaining amount was never collected from the customers as claimed,” the police indicated.
On Thursday, Thanki was charged at a Nairobi Court for falsifying information. He, however, denied the charge and was released on Ksh 200,000 cash bail.
