In a sad turn of events, a Standard Eight pupil at Ebenezer Academy, in Bungoma County, was paralysed after he was allegedly caned by a teacher for scoring 81 marks in an English test out of the possible 100.
According to a report by The Standard, the teenager sustained serious injuries after being caned 36 times, on July 11, for missing the mark in an English test.
The parents of the victim reported the matter at Bungoma Police Station disclosing that the caning was so severe to a point the pupil could not walk.
The victim’s father, Gerald Munyapala Khisa, explained that he was only informed about his son's condition when it got worse.
“The director of Ebenezer Academy called on July 16, informing me that my son was in a critical condition and was being taken to Bungoma County Referral hospital but instead, took him to a private facility.
“The hospital bill rose to Ksh 252,894.65 in just one week and the director told me to have my son discharged from the hospital since he could not afford to pay more. That he had exhausted his limit and asked me to repay him Ksh 200,000 which he used to pay the hospital bill,” Khisa was quoted by the publication.
Confirming that the boy was admitted in critical condition, the County Referral hospital administrator, Dan Oswano, stated that an X-ray done by the hospital showed that the veins were blocked and the patient was supposed to undergo surgery.
“The veins could have been blocked due to injuries on his back or buttocks,” he explained.
Bungoma South Sub-County Police Commander, Wilson Nanga, confirmed the incident and assured that action would be taken on the female teacher.
“I have asked the Nzoia Officer Commanding Station (OCS) to arrest the female teacher suspect who is likely be arraigned on assault-related charges soon,” he explained.
