Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha, on Tuesday, stated that almost all Kenyans were thieves, a comment that opened a floodgate of all types of comments.
Speaking during the launch of the National Youth Week at the University of Embu, Magoha noted that most Kenyans lacked accountability and stole public money, resulting in rampant unemployment and poverty.
“Almost everyone in this country is a thief. Lack of accountability in the use of available resources is causing joblessness. I’m trying to seal the leakage in the Ministry of Education at all costs, even if that will cost my life," he noted.
He added that there was widespread corruption and embezzlement of funds in all parts of the government, including his own ministry as The Star reported.
On social media platforms, most Kenyans were quick to agree with Magoha's sentiments.
"That's the reason I do not condemn thieves coz its a societal issue: we bribe the police, doctors, watchmen and even wives to access services then we keep shouting of corrupt leaders,' Mike commented.
"In Kenya, you are either a thief or someone is stealing from you," Wycliffe Otieno noted.
"Very true. We accept bribes from politicians, we steal from our parents, we fake vouchers at work to claim more, telcos steal your coins while asleep," Suna weighed in.
However, some of the people did not agree with the CS's sentiments, stating that some Kenyans were hardworking people.
"I understand why he would feel that way but I will tell him that he is wrong. Majority of Kenyans work very hard for their money," Ngechu opposed.
"No, we are not. Identify the thieves in the ministry have them jailed like any other ordinary thief on the ground, the rest will tow the line," another cited.
