Suspected Al Shabaab militants, early Wednesday morning, demolished a Safaricom mast located in Hulugho, Garrisa County.
Quoting Northeastern Regional Commissioner, Mohamed Birik, Xinhua News reported that the extremists always attacked masts in the area in order to disrupt communication.
This is done so that when they launch an attack, the police do not respond quickly.
"It's like they had purposely come to destroy the mast before fleeing back on foot. A multi agency security team is, however, pursuing them," stated Birik.
Locals reportedly heard a huge explosion at around 1 am as the militia vandalised the installation with high powered equipment.
The attack allegedly happened despite the huge presence of police in the area.
It took place roughly two years after a similar attack had occurred at the same spot.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a representative from Safaricom, however, stated that they did not have sufficient information regarding the incident.
Birik also vowed that the state would not slow down in the fight against the rogue group until the country is free of any of its operatives.
In mid-January, the group staged an attack at Dusit D2 hotel in Riverside, Nairobi, which left more than 20 people dead.
