Court Issues Deadline for Ferdinand Waititu to Vacate Office

Kiambu Governor, Ferdinand Waititu, was, on Thursday, granted access to his office for one day in order to collect his belongings.

In her ruling, High Court judge, Grace Ngenye, further added that after the period elapses, Waititu should keep away from the county offices.

She was giving a verdict on an application filed by the governor who was seeking to have his cash bail of Ksh15 million reduced.

Waititu argued that the terms were too harsh and he was also seeking to have the edict blocking him from office lifted.

Ngenye also ruled that the bail terms given to Waititu were sufficient and that until his case is heard and determined, he has to stay away from his office.

“Why would the rest of the governors charged with graft be barred from office and not Waititu?

“In as much as Waititu remains innocent until proven guilty, it would be a mockery to the people of Kiambu if he is allowed to continue working from his office; absurdity would reign if the court allowed him to go back to the office,” stated Ngenye.

The court further directed that on the day the governor will visit the county offices, he must be accompanied by an EACC officer.

Unsatisfied with the ruling, Waititu's lawyer, Tom Ojienda, disclosed that they would file an appeal to challenge Justice Ngenye’s ruling.

The governor has been charged in connection with the embezzlement of his county's finances to the tune of Ksh588 million.
