The government, through the Ministry of Education, on Friday, announced that it had extended the opening dates for term three of both primary and secondary schools.
The schools, which were set to re-open on August 26, will now open their gates for students and pupils on September 2, 2019.
According to a letter signed by Education PS, Belio Kipsang, the extension was made in order to allow for the National Population and Housing Census exercise to go on without any hitch.
The exercise is expected to commence on August 24 and close on August 31.
"For the forthcoming census to be successful, It is the desire of the national bureau of statistics that there be minimum movements of the population so that they may get as many people as possible in conventional households.
“It is therefore important that we reschedule the opening date for Term 3, 2019 to start on September 2, 2019, and end on October 25, 2019. This will enhance the data quality as all the students will be captured,” read the letter in part.
The letter was addressed to the Teachers Service Commission, Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association and Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association.
The census exercise is supposed to be carried out on the night of August 24 and for those who will miss out, the statisticians will catch up with them before the exercise closes.
KNBS director-general Zachary Mwangi stated that they had received Ksh18.5 million for the exercise and assured that the figures would be credible.
During the 2009 census, Wajir, Garissa and Mandera counties were reportedly disputed and the case proceeded to the court of law.
