LSK & Parliment at War Over MP's Baby Drama

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and Parliament are reportedly engaged in bitter exchange words over the latter's conduct in kicking out Kwale Woman Representative, Zuleikha Hassan, with her 5-month-old baby from its chambers.

In a statement on Friday, LSK President, Allen Gichuhi, condemned the incident demanding that the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) issues an apology to Zulekha as well as lead by example, and provide a conducive work environment for breastfeeding staff.

In a rejoinder, clerk of the National Assembly, Michael Sialai, while replying to LSK's press statement slammed the law society body stating that it needed to mind its own business.

Sialai further told off LSK arguing that of late it had abrogated itself to the power of policing Parliament even when no law had given them that imagined role.

He added that the standing orders of the assembly obligate the speaker of any house of Parliament to order any member who conducts himself or herself disorderly manner to get out of the chambers.

The National Assembly Clerk also confirmed that Parliament had facilities for lactating members and staff with a baby care unit.

The business was temporarily disrupted in the National Assembly, on Wednesday, when Hassan walked in with a baby during proceedings.

Temporary House Deputy Speaker, Christopher Omulele, had a hectic time controlling MPs in the House as some engaged in a shouting match while others could be seen shoving each other.

She was later ordered out, with Omulele advising MPs to use facilities the Parliamentary Service Commission had provided for lactating mothers.

The facility is located at Red Cross building, just Opposite Parliament.
