Matiang'i's PS Cracks Whip on Prison Bosses

All officers in charge of prisons in Kenya have been moved in a new major reshuffle.

Following the transfers, Correctional Services Principal Secretary Zainab Hussein on Sunday gave the affected officers a week to report to their new stations.

Hussein also noted that she would personally issue Authority to Incur Expenditure (AIE) to the officers at their new stations.

The move comes after DCI detectives blocked the presidential pardon of 120 criminals across the country.

According to the Daily Nation, the criminals are said to be hardcore and not eligible for presidential pardon thus suspicion of bribery of top prisons officials who selected the convicts to be freed.

DCI had to rely on fingerprint analysis to dissect the list and avoid the release of hardcore criminals back into society.

In April the security forces at the coast were left in a quagmire after President Uhuru Kenyatta accidentally pardoned dangerous criminals from prisons in the region.

“The ex-prisoners have already resumed their works of crime and are wreaking havoc all across the coastal region, ” Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata revealed while addressing the public at Mkunguni square in Lamu town.

He also stated that the police were already tracking the criminals down to re-arrest them and send them back to jail to complete their initial jail terms in full.

The commissioner urged the public to stay vigilant and report such persons to the police if sighted in their areas of residence.
