Unknown Details of Uhuru's Stepmother

Little is known about Grace Wahu, Jomo Kenyatta's first wife and President Uhuru Kenyatta's stepmother.

It is reported that the late Wahu got married under Gikuyu traditions to the late Kenyatta in 1919 and sired two children; Margaret Wambui Kenyatta and Peter Muigai.

After the death and burial of Mzee Kenyatta, Wahu faded from the public eye and opted to lead a quiet life in Dagoreti, where she raised her two children.

It is said that when she appeared in public, she would be seen wearing her headgear and flowing dress as she took her seat near the dais.

She is said to have worshipped like commoners and tithed like everyone else.

When the time came for Wahu to write her will, it is alleged that she left most of her belongings to the church.

The late Wahu allegedly signed away her 5.5-acres of land in Dagoretti, 1985. She wanted a church constructed in the land valued more than Ksh 10,000,000.

She also wanted an eighth of the property reserved for her final resting place.

However, on April 16, 2006, she changed her mind and left her property to her daughter, Wambui.

“The grant of probate of the will dated April 15, 1985, of the deceased was issued to Margaret Wambui Kenyatta on April 8, 2008. The deceased appointed her only surviving child Margret Wambui Kenyatta to be the sole executrix," read court documents seen by the Standard.
