Matiang'i's Ex-driver Condemned to Life in Prison

Constable Francis Karanja, a former driver to Interior CS, Fred Matiang'i, was sentenced to life in prison after he and three other officers were found guilty of poaching.

On Tuesday, Senior Resident Magistrate, Jane Kamau, read the sentence to Karanja, Stephen Ngawai, Martin Mwiti, Peter Kuria Kimungi at a court in Kibera and gave them an option of paying a fine of Ksh20 million each.

When they were arrested, the officers were based at the department of Government Buildings Unit.

Kimungi was NARC Kenya leader Martha Karua's bodyguard, while Chege and Mwiti were a driver and guard attached to a former principal secretary.

Detectives had been trailing their colleagues who were travelling in two Toyota Prados, one which had GK number plates.

Five kilos of ivory were found in one of the vehicles after an extensive police search on-site and at Lang'ata Police Station.

The operation started after KWS officers got an intelligence report on the illegal business.

On Monday, a Spanish woman, Pich-Aguilera Maria, was arrested at JKIA for wearing a bangle made of ivory.

She pleaded guilty and was fined Ksh1 million with an alternative of 12 months in jail.

According to KWS, after paying to secure her release, Maria immediately proceeded with her journey to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
