MP Claps Back at Colleagues for Demanding That He Marries

John Paul Mwirigi, the Member of Parliament for Igembe South, has clapped back at his fellow MPs who are putting him under pressure to get married.

Alluding to recent statements made by Igembe Central MP, Kubai Kiringo and South Imenti MP, Kathuri Murungi at his August 17 graduation party, Mwirigi on Thursday responded that no one can determine his future life.

The two MPs, who were among the many that had come to the event at Riaki Primary School grounds, had told him that he had come of age and should get himself a 'beautiful, disciplined lady of stature and character'.

"You have been a great mentor to the youth in my constituency since you joined Mt Kenya University, Nkubu Campus, but there is one important thing left, marriage," Murungi had chided him.

Murungi even offered to hold Mwirigi's hand in the search for the said 'beautiful lady of stature and character'.

The youngest MP, however, made it clear that his energies are currently directed at delivering manifesto pledges to his constituents.

He reiterated the argument that if no one determined his political future of being an MP, then no one would determine when he would plan to get married.

"I will only inform them when I marry," he told reporters.

John Paul Mwirigi's stellar rise to become a legislator has been a subject fit for fairy tales.

Now 25, he became the MP for Igembe South when he was just 23.

From a simple boy riding public transport, campaigning on foot in a trademark grey sweater, his campaign posters printed in black and white, he managed to convince the constituents to vote him into parliament.

He made history by becoming the country's youngest legislator and beating other political heavyweights. President Uhuru gifted him with a Toyota Prado, having traveled from Meru to Nairobi using public transport to attend the MP's inauguration.

He now holds a Bachelor of Education Degree from Mount Kenya University, which he earned on August 9, 2019.
