Inside Raila's Meeting With KNUT to Save Sossion

Officials from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), on Tuesday, sought the intervention of former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, on the woes being witnessed in the union.

The officials allegedly met with the ODM leader to end the stalemate between KNUT, whose Secretary General is Wilson Sossion and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

According to People Daily, those who met Raila are believed to be sympathetic of the KNUT Secretary General.

They allegedly sought advice and intervention on the relations between the two.

On his part, Raila, assured the officials that he had been trying to make the three, KNUT, TSC and the Ministry of Education have a decent relationship.

“Mr. Odinga assured the union officials that he had been trying to help bring all the parties to the negotiating table and ensure a harmonious relationship between KNUT, TSC and the Ministry of Education,” read a statement by Odinga’s spokesperson, Dennis Onyango.

He further appealed to the union to give priority to dialogue and negotiations before going on strikes.

Raila further called on the union members to end internal wrangles and aim at serving members.

The long protracted tiff between KNUT and the TSC, also resulted in the deregistration of KNUT Secretary-General on July 29, 2019.

“We are in a tight corner as a union because we are unable to even run operations at the branches,” a high-ranking KNUT official stated previously.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and secondary school heads have reportedly openly sided with the TSC, going on to disown KNUT.
