As famous reggae DJ, Chris Odhiambo alias Kriss Darlin pursues his bid to replace the late Kibra MP, Ken Okoth, Kenyans.co.ke decided to look at other celebrities who cast their hat into politics and how that turned out for them.
1. Maurice Ochieng alias Mdomo Baggy:
The former Redyukulass comedian first threw his hat into politics in 2007, when he vied for the Kamukunji parliamentary seat.
Although he was unsuccessful in his bid, he didn't give up and tried once more in 2013, but this time things were even worse for him as he failed to beat his opponents in the ODM nominations.
2. Peter Kaimenyi also known as Kajairo:
Kajairo started off on the iconic TV show, Redyukulass, doing humorous remixes to famous songs.
In 2007 eyed the Embakasi seat, before it was split up, that for many years had been held by one of the toughest politicians in Nairobi, the late David Mwenje.
The comedian, who was the ODM candidate, unsuccessfully contested the parliamentary seat against Mwenje, Ferdinand Waititu and Irshad Sumra.
3. John Kiarie alias KJ:
He is arguably the most successful of the Redyukulass trio when it comes to politics.
During the 2007 General Election, he vied for the Dagoretti Constituency parliamentary seat, one of the most hotly contested and disputed political zones, but lost.
The former ODM youth chairman decamped to the Jubilee party and won the Dagoretti South seat in 2013. He successfully defended his seat in 2017.
4. Charles Njagua alias Jaguar:
He was one of the very few MPs who became first-time MPs following the 2017 General Election.
The Kigeugeu singer vied for the Starehe parliamentary seat against seasoned politicians like Maina Kamanda and emerged top.
5. Sabina Chege:
The Murang’a woman representative is one of many talents and used to be an actor at the Kenya National Theatre,
The former Tausi cast member served as a radio presenter for many years where she addressed issues on development and women at Coro FM.
Sabina is serving her first term in the National Assembly.
6. Gathoni wa Muchomba:
The Kiambu woman representative was a media personality who turned into a politician. She was a radio host at Kameme FM for many years, gaining widespread popularity among the Kikuyu community.
She has hinted at giving Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu a run for his money, by contesting the county top seat in the 2022 General Election.
7. Mohamed Ali alias Moha Jicho Pevo:
The famous media personality broke into the limelight with his daring Swahili investigative features.
He is currently the Member of Parliament for Nyali Constituency, after vying as an independent candidate.
8. Boniface Mwangi:
The former photojournalist turned activist threw his hat in the political arena when he unsuccessfully vied for the Starehe parliamentary seat, losing to Charles Njagua whose shot at the seat was his first attempt.
Boniface vied on an Ukweli Party ticket.
9. Eunice Wambui alias Nyasuguta:
She broke into the lime light as Mogaka’s wife in the famous KBC show Vitimbi.
Nyasuguta tried her luck for the Embakasi South Constituency seat but she failed to go through Jubilee Party nominations.
