DCI Questioned Over Controversial Witness in Itumbi's Case

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations office, was on the receiving end of a barrage of questions, regarding one of the key witnesses in the Denis Itumbi case.

DCI Kenya, on Monday, tweeted that one of the witnesses identified as Samwel Gateri was not one of the state witnesses, as was reported by several local publications.

"We wish to clarify that contrary to insinuation by one Samwel Gateri that he’s a state witness in respect to the criminal case against one Ole Itumbi, is false and misleading," an excerpt of the tweet disclosed.

The state office went on to reveal that Gateri was actually among the suspects under investigation in connection to the falsification of documents case.

However, the controversial individual's name (Gateri)  could be visibly seen in a list written down by the prosecution in the charge sheet against Itumbi.

Gateri had earlier on written to the court in a bid to withdraw himself from the trial, citing threats to his life.

In an affidavit that was received by the Chief Magistrate's chamber at the Milimani Law Courts, he cited that there had been threats to his life, and that was why he wanted out.

He added that officials at the DCI had been forcing him to confess about having personal knowledge of both the Deputy President William Ruto and Dennis Itumbi.

A photo of the alleged charge sheet was shared across various social media platforms, with many questioning DCI's credibility in the entire matter.

Senate majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen was among those who called out the investigators over the contradicting statements.

"The evidence against your assertions is overwhelming. What do you have to say?" Murkomen posted.
