Sonko's Message to Uhuru Hours After Being Summoned by EACC

Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, on Wednesday, pledged his support to President Uhuru Kenyatta on the fight against corruption.

On his Facebook page, the governor assured the president that Kenyans were rallying behind him to end the corruption menace.

"Let me say this, as the governor of Nairobi I will support the president in the fight against corruption. For the DPP, DCI and EACC, the work you are doing is commendable."

"Even if the president is my friend, I am not above the law. If I commit an offense, the president should not be looped into it, I will not go into hiding like Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu " Sonko asserted.

The Nairobi County boss affirmed that he would surrender to the police in case he was found guilty of corruption.

"You entrusted me with this job as your governor, and for the last two years, I have been managing almost Ksh 70 billion of your money. If I was corrupt, why didn't I steal the Ksh72 billion?" he posed to Nairobians.

On Tuesday, September 3, the governor was summoned by the commission to answer questions concerning multimillion garbage collection and disposal tenders awarded to 13 firms by City Hall.

He arrived at Integrity Centre at 6 a.m. and left at around 4 p.m, accompanied by  EALA MP Simon Mbugua, a section of Nairobi MCAs, his chief of staff and lawyer Cecil Miller.

Sonko revealed that the interrogation mainly centered on concerns raised by the environment committee about firms that got tenders without proper qualifications.

He further maintained that most of the questions were on procurement and that he was only being questioned as the overall in-charge of the city-county.
