Sonko Explains Mysterious Millions EACC Traced to His Account

Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, on Thursday 5, 2019, explained where Ksh20 million found in his account by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) came from.

The county boss stated that the money had been acquired from businesses that he had engaged in before he became the governor.

"I would never touch a coin from the public," he stated.

Detectives from EACC alleged that some of the firms, which won the Ksh357 million tender, deposited more than Ksh 20 million to the governor's account.

When quizzed about unremitted tax, the governor maintained that he had paid all of the county's taxes apart from those that had been incurred during former Governor Evans Kideros's tenure.

"Currently we don't have a problem. We have paid more than Sh5 billion in taxes. The problem that has arisen is from the previous regime," he noted.

On Wednesday, September 4, the governor was implicated in a Ksh357 million garbage tender scandal.

It is alleged that the money was paid through proxies in an attempt to avoid raising suspicion.

Sonko was grilled by the agency in relation to corruption in the award of the tenders for the years 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Appearing before EACC, Sonko recorded 13 different statements and denied any involvement in the procurement.
