Heroic Tanker Driver Sheds Tears After Cash Reward by Govt

A heroic driver who saved lives on Thursday 5, September, when he jumped into a burning fuel tanker and steered it out of a petrol station, shed tears after he was rewarded by a government official.

James Mugo Kangara was rewarded Ksh10,000 by the Embu County Commissioner, Galgallo Abdullahi, for the heroic act.

“The driver acted boldly and I must reward him,” he is quoted by the Daily Nation saying.

Abdullahi noted that Mugo's actions had saved many lives and property worth of millions.

“I never expected this would happen to me. I’m excited,” a thankful Kangara expressed as he received his gift.

The driver narrated that he was offloading petrol at the station when a fire started from beneath the tanker.

“I managed to drive the burning tanker away from the shops and residential houses and jumped out before the tanker burst into flames and was reduced to a shell,” he recalls.

Jane Njoki Kaina, the area chief at Rwika Shopping Centre in Mbeere South, called the police immediately after she was notified of the incident.

“There were no casualties or injuries. We laud the quick and selfless action of the driver for driving the burning tanker away from shops and residential houses and averting a disaster,” she stated.
