Drama as 'Cripples' Flee on Foot Following Police Raid

Makueni County was the scene of an animated police raid on Friday, September 13, which involved six beggars of Tanzanian decent.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Makueni Police Commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan, narrated the unbelievable encounter in which one man and five women believed to be crippled, bolted off their wheelchairs and turned tail to avoid arrest.

"We arrested six of them, however, one of them got up and escaped behind the shops, took a motorbike and escaped,” Napeiyan stated.

He went on to reveal that the six suspects who were eventually apprehended were part of a group that were ferried to Wote town every morning, where they set about begging for money while pretending to be disabled.

The six were identified as Minza Mboje, Regina Martin, Robi Marwa, Maria Maningu, Rehema Juma and John Sivendi.

Napeiyan and his officers conducted the surprise raid following reports from the general public about an upsurge in the number suspicious beggars in the town centre.

Upon questioning, the beggars confessed to having been brought by an unidentified individual for a specific mission.

In a similar incident back on March 22, 2019, a woman behind one of the most notorious physically challenged beggar's syndicate was nabbed in Nakuru.

The suspect, Mary Mong’are later on confessed to using foreign beggars to earn a living, further adding that most of her 'crippled' gang were from neighbouring Tanzania.
