The government on Tuesday, September 24, announced a new reward system to curb a menace that has been causing losses amounting to millions of shillings.
A statement by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority, states anyone who provides information about individuals who steal public road resources such as street rails, is entitled to a handsome reward.
"We are seeking information on road vandalism especially on street lights and guard rails. Any person with such reliable information that may lead to arrest will be rewarded Ksh 100,000," the state agency shared on Twitter.
Vandalism has been a constant thorn in the flesh of the agency, with losses running into hundreds of millions each year.
Individuals who witness or have any information about culprits responsible for such acts can report it in a discreet manner.
"Please report via our hotline: 0202722222 or email us info@kura.go.ke," KURA stated.
The wave of vandalism targeting road fittings especially along the Thika Superhighway has posed a new challenge in the maintenance of the road infrastructure in Kenya.
Vandalism and theft of road barriers and signs erected for safety presents a serious danger to the lives of motorists and pedestrians alike.
Back in May 2019, close to 20 street lamps, each valued at between Ksh 20,000 and Ksh 30,000 were stolen from the streets of Thika Town, during one of the many similar incidents that happen on a daily basis, a recent report revealed.
