President Uhuru Kenyatta has endeared himself to Kenyans by making jokes that more often than not, have left them in stitches.
The president’s off the cuff remarks have helped demystify him as an ordinary citizen who is not afraid to express his emotions.
Uhuru even goes on to laugh at his own jokes but behold, there is a man who is able to remain unbothered regardless of what the head of state.
He goes by the name Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Stelu Lokolool and serves as his aide de camp.
His strategic position behind the president puts him in the full glare of cameras.
His tough look even when everyone else around Uhuru has burst out in laughter may be attributed to his military pedigree or the sensitive nature of his job.
Many Kenyans think that he is a bodyguard but on the contrary, he is more or less a personal assistant.
A former presidential escort officer who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke explained the following roles of an ADC.
An ADC's role, which is performed by a military officer, is mostly ceremonial; to give the presidency dignity and honour. Officers who achieve the rank of a major are trained in the duties.
He is supposed to escort the president out of State House into a waiting car, open the door, then standing at attention and saluting when the president sits. He then closes the door and occupies this seat.
He, at times, carries the president's personal items like mobile phones and speeches.
The ADC also receives visitors and gifts or other items on behalf of the president.
When the president is travelling by road, he communicates with the escort commander to halt the convoy in case he needs to make a stopover.
During visits by other presidents, they are assigned local ADCs from the military.
In case of an attack, he shields the president as the first line of defence.
