Ex-Police Constable to be Freed After Shooting Dead MP's Son

Dickson Mwangi Munene, a former police constable will soon be walking free after he shot dead an ex-member of Parliament MP's son, The Standard reports.

Munene was sentenced to death after he was found guilty of killing, James Ngang’a, son of former MP Patrick Muiruri.

The former law enforcer made an application for re-sentencing following the Supreme Court decision in 2017, directing that all murder and robbery with violence convicts’ death sentences be reviewed.

The court, therefore, considered the 10 years Munene served in Kamiti prison where he was described as a model prisoner.

He studied while in jail earning a Masters degree in business studies, which earned him recognition by the Commissioner-General of Prisons who awarded him a certificate for being a model prisoner.

Through his lawyer, Kioko Kilukumi, Munene told the court his family's living standards had deteriorated, especially since he was the sole breadwinner and was in prison.

He also explained that he had developed hypertension due to the conditions in prison.

Munene's lawyer also told the court that efforts to reconcile with the family of the deceased have been futile and that he regretted the events that led to the killing.

On January 24, 2009, was charged with killing Ng'ang'a in Westlands. The deceased was shot dead at around 7am after a confrontation with the officer.

Ng'ang'a who was then 29, had just completed his PhD degree course in international law at Sheffield University in the United Kingdom.

Munene and his counterpart Alexander Chepkonga were found guilty of murdering Ng'ang'a, however, the latter successfully appealed against the death sentence and was set free.
