Eight people were brutally murdered on Tuesday, October 1, in what authorities described as retaliatory attacks in Mandera County.
Confirming the incident, North Eastern Regional Commissioner Mohamed Birik stated that the armed militia raided Doomal village following an attack that happened in Ethiopia where two people lost their lives and 100 camels were stolen.
“The anger spilt to Kenya where they have killed at least seven locals in retaliation. We have deployed more security personnel to ensure calmness and justice,” he was quoted by The Standard.
The attack came days after Mandera Governor Ali Roba held a meeting urging residents to live in peace.
Roba held a fundraiser on Sunday in Takaba town in Mandera West where he stated, “We are here as a team with a simple message of a united Mandera in everything we are doing so that more development can be realised in our county."
He called for the political leaders to work together so as to drive development in the area.
"We have decided to bring our people together through fundraising whereby all communities will be raising funds to assist projects for other communities and this will build our relationships,” he stated.
Upon learning of the Tuesday attack, Roba flew to the scene where he took part in efforts to defuse tensions in the area.
Reiterating his call for peace, the county head stated, "Peace is good for development. We don’t need such incidents here and I urge other leaders to preach peace."
Additional security personnel have been deployed in the area to handle security threats.
