Standard Media Comes Clean on Denying Staff Free Goodies

Standard Media Group on Thursday, October 3, came clean on denying its employees free goodies.

This is after reports that the media house withdrew its complimentary newspaper normally given to staff for free and reserved the copies only for senior editors.

"This is to advise that as from 1st October 2019 staff will receive their complimentary newspaper from the digital platform through the ePaper," read a memo shared by the Media house's Human Resource Director Nicholus Siwaton.

Reports by Business Today indicated that the staff were thus required to purchase the epaper at Ksh 30, which allegedly caused a stir among the employees.

Kenyans.co.ke spoke to an employee at The Standard who clarified that the staff could access the paper in digital form for free.

"The Standard Digital copy (ePapaer) was re-launched with improved reader experience and one access to all the products," explained Siwaton.

The Standard also withdrew supply of free copies of other competing papers such as the Daily Nation,The Star and Business Daily.

The complementary paper initially offered to staff at the Mombasa Road-based media house enabled journalists to assess as well as keep tabs on their competitors.

A number of employees, however, are not pleased with this new development as most considered it gesture honour from the company.

Business Today further disclosed that the Standard journalists are being forced to share the few copies available in meetings.

The company, however, circulates about 50,000 copies on weekdays, with returns as high as 40%.
