Murkomen Up in Arms Over Female Athlete

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, Kipchumba Murkomen tore into Kisii Governor, James Ongwae, over a post he shared on his Twitter page on Sunday, October 6, 2019.

The governor shared a post congratulating celebrated athlete Hellen Obiri for her stunning win in the 5000-metre race at the ongoing IAAF World Athletics Championships.

However, the county head termed the event as 5000m marathon, an error which senator Murkomen was quick to point out.

Murkomen was quick to note the error in the governor's post stating, "Bwana Governor It’s only 5000M. Marathon was won by someone else. Nevertheless congratulations to our national heroine."

"Some posts are meant not just for the person I am responding to but a wider audience that is wallowing in the same miasma of deceit and ignorance. It’s the humble duty of a state officer to use this platform for reproof, correction and instruction for the national good," Murkomen added.

World champion Hellen Obiri retained her 5,000M title in a Championship Record time at the Khalifa Stadium in Doha.

She led Margaret Chelimo to a Kenyan1 - 2 finish in, registering a championship record time of 14 minutes, 14.72 seconds.

During her post-race interview, she stated that the fear of going back home with no medal, and the heartbreak she suffered in 10,000m final, motivated her to win gold.
