It is without a doubt that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is a big football fan.
Many times when there have been matches inside and outside the country, he has been seen making a grand entrance into stadiums to cheer on his favorite teams alongside other fans.
On June 20, 2019, Odinga took his time to visit the men’s national senior football team Harambee Stars at their hotel in Egypt while they were conducting the final preparation before the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) matches.
Apart from his spectatorship, Raila Odinga is a fairly good player, having been a member of Bunge FC, the parliament's football team when he was the MP for Lang'ata Constituency.
With the campaign for presidency hot on his heels, Raila, who also happens to be the Gor Mahia FC patron, opted for a brief show of skills with Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho on March 28, 2017, at the Kongowea Stadium in Mombasa during one of his tours.
Despite his advancing age, he showed fairly impressive form and knowledge of the game, much to the delight of onlookers who were impressed by the display.
Joho who was with Raila also joined the field and had a one-two with his party boss. This is not the first time Joho had expressed interest in the game.
In 2017, the Mombasa governor inaugurated an eleven aside, Fifa standard Astroturf Uwanja wa Mbuzi Stadium in Kongowea, Nyali Sub-county and engaged in an opening match.
His love for football has however been not all too rosy for him.
He recently found himself offside when he posted about football on social media when residents were anticipating his response to the Likoni Ferry tragedy.
He praised Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for earning a point against Manchester United in an English Premier League tie, much to the chagrin of Kenyans who were getting increasingly concerned with the county government's silence on the grave accident.
