Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Monday, October 7, sounded a warning to prominent persons involved in drug trafficking.

Matiang'i, who was speaking during a visit at Jamia Mosque in Nairobi, stated that there was an ongoing investigation on 30 prominent personalities linked to narcotics.

“As the government, we have declared war on drug trafficking. The other day, we walked with the Inspector General of Police in the streets of Kisauni and the situation was deplorable.

“I will be lying to myself if I stand here and participate in public relations with you because the issue is a menace and is taken seriously by the government,” Matiang'i spoke.

The CS, while asking the Muslim leaders to support the government in the fight.

“It’s not ordinary people participating in drug trafficking, but well known and connected individuals. It is time to do our part and we ask for your support on this, by always speaking against it in mosques,”  the CS added.

He also responded to queries from the religious leaders who spoke on extrajudicial killings, by absolving the government of the blame and promised that those involved would face the full wrath of the law.

“The government doesn’t have a policy on extrajudicial killings. We have the respect of life and where there are cases of misbehaviour, we are still investigating and will take action,” he concluded.

On a lighter note, Matiang'i promised that the government would open an  Immigration and Registration of Person office in Garissa Town, to help Muslims from Northern Kenya acquire identity cards and travel documents so as to avoid crowding Nairobi for the same services.

He noted that the Muslim community had a hard time getting the travel documents, especially during the Hajj season.

The CS was accompanied by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai among other Muslim leaders.
