There was a moment of panic in Westlands, Nairobi on Tuesday, October 8, when blasts were heard in the evening hours.
The blasts were reported to have occurred between 6pm and 7pm and left a number of residents who live and work in the area with questions over what was going on.
Kenyans on high alert were quick to take to Twitter to find out what was going on.
"Loud bangs and sirens going off a few minutes ago around Lions place Westlands. Any idea?" one user stated.
"What is happening in Westlands?! Kuna kelele sana. (there's alot of noise)" another added.
The blasts were attributed to fireworks by a temple where the Indian community was celebrating the Dussehra festival.
Similar celebrations occured at SSD Temple along Lower Kabete. Road users were warned of heavy traffic along the roads near the temples.
Dussehra Festivity is a major Hindu festival celebrated at the end of Navaratri every year. It is observed on the tenth day in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin or Kartik, the sixth and seventh month.
The festival that signifies the triumph of good over evil, Dussehra, is one of the most noteworthy Indian festivals.
"The festival of Dussehra is celebrated with much fervour and enthusiasm across the country. According to Hindu religious text Ramayana, it is the day when Lord Rama had eliminated Lanka king, Ravana, who had kidnapped his wife, Goddess Sita," explains Indian site NDTV.
