Deputy President William Ruto, on Thursday, October 10, travelled to Vienna, Austria to support Eliud Kipchoge, who is set to make history by participating in the INEOS 1:59 challenge.
While speaking at Malinya Grounds in Kakamega, Ruto disclosed that he would not attend the burial of former Senator Boni Khalwale's first wife Adelaide.
He explained that he would head to Vienna to represent the government in support of Kipchoge.
“Kenya is a sporting nation and because of that, we have one of us who will be going to make history by becoming the first man to run a marathon in under two hours.
"President Uhuru Kenyatta and I have agreed that I will go to ensure the flag of Kenya is flown high," he told the mourners.
The deputy president's wife, Rachel Ruto, is also expected to be in Austria to cheer the marathoner.
"We celebrate our own Eliud Kipchoge! Just like we did in 2017 in Monza, Italy when he broke the world record (by) running the marathon in 2:00:25 hours.
"We will be there once again in Vienna, Austria, cheering him on as the greatest marathoner of all time," she posted on her Twitter account.
The world marathon record holder's recognition in athletics began in 2003, when he won a gold medal at the 5,000 metres final at the World Championships.
