Caroline Mutoko became a household in urban Kenya during her tenure as a morning radio show host. Over the years, she has built an enviable persona of a woman who speaks confidence in whatever she does.
While speaking to a gathering of secondary school students sponsored by a local bank in April 2016, Mutoko narrated that she has worked almost all her life.
She recounted that two months after she completed form four, she got a job as a messenger at the age of 17.
"I always tell people one of the things about me is I don’t know what it is like not to work but I also don’t know what it is like to be broke because I’ve always worked,” she stated.
In her first job, Mutoko stated that she used to collect cheques and cash cheques at the bank, pick up invoices and deliver statements to clients.
"I have gone from a messenger to a waitress. My transitions have always been the same. I always got where I was going because I did more than was expected of me and I did it better than was expected," she stated.
Mutoko also noted that at one time, she worked as a messenger for Lady Magazine before she landed a gig at Capital FM around the year 2000 that involved giving traffic updates and cueing up music into the system.
"There was a show that used to run from 2 o’clock until 4 o’clock and between 3 p.m. and about 5 p.m. There were three constant traffic updates,” she continued.
It is during her stint at Capital FM when she finally got a breakthrough and her radio took off.
“There was a policy back in the day to ensure that the music was a lot more dark which meant it wasn’t only white musicians through including black musicians. Guess who the black girl to go with the black musicians was…?" she concluded.
The media personality later went to Kiss FM, as the morning show host and later the Group Managing Manager at Radio Africa.
