Deputy President William Ruto on Thursday, October 4, was speaking at a graduation ceremony where he ordered for the implementation of a curriculum change.
While presiding over the 3rd Graduation Ceremony of Kisii National Polytechnic, Kisii County, Ruto directed that a competency-based curriculum be effected in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TIVET) institutions.
He tasked the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) and Curriculum Development Assessment and Certificate Council (CDACC) to ensure that the transition is effected from January 2020.
"I want the relevant Education state departments, TVETA, CDACC to ensure all polytechnics transition to the competency-based curriculum courses and examinations from January 2020," he declared.
Ruto explained that the government had allocated enough infrastructure to implement the CBC in tertiary institutions.
He further stated that the transition would have numerous advantages for the students as it would offer more value.
"We want the change to happen to reduce the number of time students take in TIVET institutions. There's no reason why a student should spend three years for a course that they can finish in 18 months," he explained.
He further called on the institutions to offer modular courses for the students so that they can continuously upgrade their learning while pursuing their primary courses.
Already the CBC has taken root at the basic primary level and there is the concern of how it will transition learners to junior and senior secondary up to post-secondary level.
University deans held a consultative forum on August 2019, to map out how the CBC would be implemented in universities.
“This time, the universities felt there was a need to start preparing early. They resolved there was a need to understand what the curriculum is about and what adjustments are needed for it to be successful,” University of Embu Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academics, Research and Extension Kiplagat Kotut stated.
