The family of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, who was the victim of a cold-blooded daylight murder, has demanded justice as they come to terms with the death of their loved one.
Speaking from their home in Makueni County on Wednesday, September 10, Mbobu's family called for speedy investigations into the circumstances that led to his death.
Led by his brother James Maluki, the family urged the government to provide answers to the murder that happened on Tuesday, September 9, on Magadi Road.
Mbobu, the third born in a family of 12 siblings, was described as the pillar of the family and as one who interacted well with everyone.
According to reports, unidentified attackers had followed his vehicle before shooting five bullets through his window, instantly killing him.
“We are demanding justice over our loved one's death. Mbobu had no issues with anyone and was a professional who conducted himself well. We do not know why someone would want him dead,” stated Maluki.
“Everyone has freedom of movement and speech. This killing sends the wrong message to professionals, as it means they can not conduct themselves without looking over their shoulders all the time,” Maluki, a fellow lawyer, added.
Mbobu's Last Moments
On the day of his death, Mbobu is said to have clocked in at his office in Nairobi's Central Business District at his normal time of 5am.
He then later proceeded to prayers at the Holy Family Basilica at approximately 6:50am, as was his norm.
Speaking to KTN, workers at the building where Mbobu was based revealed they had noted a change in mood in the lawyer, who they had described as jovial.
“Normally, he is very happy and jovial, but on that day, I noticed he was not his usual self. He greeted me, but I could tell something was amiss,” the building's guard noted.
In the evening, Mbobu is said to have held a meeting with unknown people inside one of the city hotels in the CBD.
He then left the hotel and drove to attend another meeting within the CBD before heading to Lang'ata Road. While on Lang'ata Road, he branched to Magadi Road to connect to Gataka Road through Catholic University of East and Central Africa Road
Mbobu, who was heading home upon his arrival at the Magadi Road, was suddenly attacked by two people who were on a motorcycle.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred during a traffic snarl-up along the Magadi Road, with the assailants taking the opportunity to shoot him dead.
LSK Demands & DCI's Probe
After his demise, the Law Society of Kenya issued a statement, demanding swift investigations and accountability from security agencies. LSK President Faith Odhiambo described the murder as a brutal and premeditated assassination that pointed to the dangerous climate facing legal practitioners in the country.
“The Law Society of Kenya expresses profound grief and concern following the brutal gunning down of Mr Kyalo Mbobu, a reputable Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a resounding three decades of practice. This most unfortunate occurrence marks a sad day for the legal profession and for the entire country,” Odhiambo stated.
Meanwhile, the DCI disclosed it had commenced investigations after visiting the Galleria Brookside area, the scene of the crime, as well as conducting forensic analysis on Mbobu's vehicle and collecting evidence.
