The Ministry of Defence, through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), has begun preparations for a comprehensive integration and upgrade of Thika Stadium in Kiambu County, a significant step toward transforming the facility into a modern sports hub.

The initiative, which is a collaborative effort between the National Government and the Kiambu County Government, was undertaken in line with a directive by President William Ruto.

Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru, on Wednesday, December 10,  led an inspection tour of the stadium to assess its current state and to identify key areas requiring urgent improvement.

The visit marked the beginning of a coordinated upgrade plan aimed at enhancing the stadium's infrastructure and standards.

According to the Ministry, renovations will focus on strengthening key structural components, modernising athlete facilities, and enhancing the spectator experience.

Once complete, Thika Stadium is expected to serve as a state-of-the-art centre for sports development, talent nurturing, and community engagement across Kiambu and neighbouring regions.

Mariru reiterated the government's commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible public sports facilities, stating that the upgrade aligns with the broader goal of empowering youth and promoting healthy, active lifestyles.

He emphasised that the KDF will execute the project with precision, professionalism, and strict adherence to timelines.

Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Chief of National Projects at Defence Headquarters, and Ali Osman Korar, a member of the Kiambu County Executive Committee for Youth Affairs, Sports, and Communication, accompanied the PS. They emphasised the importance of strong intergovernmental collaboration for the project's successful delivery.

The Ministry also expressed optimism that the partnership with Governor Kimani Wamatangi's administration will result in the complete transformation of Thika Stadium into a world-class sports facility that meets the region's growing demand.

KDF has been tasked with the construction, renovation, and even supervision of several stadia across the country as part of the government's efforts to develop sports infrastructure, especially as the country gears up to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Thika Stadium will now join several stadia developed by the KDF, including Ulinzi Sports Complex, Nyayo National Stadium, Kasarani and Police SACCO Stadium.
