Orange Democratic Movement leader, Raila Odinga is at a crossroads after the court ordered a DNA test on his late son Fidel Odinga.
The deceased's widow, Lwam Bekele, is embroiled in a court battle with Odinga's wife, Ida, on Fidel's inheritance. Ida alleged that Fidel sired twins with another woman and giving Bekele custody over his estate would lock out other interested parties.
Nation on Friday, October 18, reported that Odinga's family is contemplating how to undertake the task, because Justice Aggrey Muchelule ruled out exhumation as a way of collecting Fidel's DNA samples.
Ms Bekele, who sired one child with Fidel, objected the move asserting that her son was the only heir to her late husband’s property.
Exhuming Fidel's body would have been the shortest way possible. However, ruling it out leaves the Odingas with no other choice but to conduct a DNA test based on blood and tissue samples of living members of the opposition chief's family.
Justice Muchelule, on Wednesday, October 16, directed the embattled family to cooperate for the extraction of blood samples and other tissues to be used in the tests.
This means that the twins' parentage will be ascertained from Fidel’s parents, Ida and Odinga with an assumption that the two are the biological parents of Fidel.
Bekele, who opposed the move, argued that the said twins were born six months after Fidel's death and their birth certificates had no indication of the father of the said minors. She also accused Ida of tainting her image.
"Ida has continuously made false, defamatory and unkind remarks about my family, my friends and I.
"The averments are preposterous, offensive and made in bad taste. Ida Odinga has the autopsy reports. I believe the statement she recorded with the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) following Fidel's death informs her opinions and is the genesis of our differences," Bekele lashed out at Ida.
Fidel's multi-million estate comprises of his Karen home, three parcels of land, two Range Rovers, a Nissan Sunny and a Mercedes Benz, and seven bank accounts.
