A group of 30 African-Americans and African-Britons have flown to Kenya to flee discrimination and mass shootings that have been happening in the recent past.
The team was led by Kea Tiffani Simmons, who admits to having already invested in property in Juja.
According to The Standard, visitors were drawn from the UK and different parts of the US; North Carolina, Texas, New York, Virginia, Missouri, Florida, Alabama, Las Vegas-Nevada, Mississippi, Virginia, and Los Angeles, jetted into the country on the morning of Wednesday, October 16.
“We are tired of being blacks in America. We are tired of living in fear of being shot because of the colour of our skin. We are tired of being called Americans,” stated Simmons.
Simons, 37, is the founder of World Views Organisation and has been travelling to Kenya since 2012. She already has a local name, Wakesho Akinyi, and has applied for Kenyan citizenship.
“My second Kenyan name, Akinyi, means born in the morning. It reminds me of how good it feels to wake up in the morning and feel no discrimination or profiling based on race,” she mentioned.
British-Jamaican Pat Headly, 65, praised East Africa as the best place for any African-Americans or African-Britons to settle.
“Some of us live in the UK not by choice but because of black history. Having lived in the UK for 55 years, I can tell you with certainty that the experiences I have had have not been flattering,” he stated.
The trained engineer admitted to having already done some investments in Uganda and plans to also acquire a piece of Nairobi's real estate.
When asked why they chose Kenya and not any other African country, Simmons smiled and described Kenyans as warm and friendly.
“The Maasai are the last samurais,” she added with finality.
