DCI Bust Bank ATM Robbers in the Act

Attempts by a group of four men to rob a bank in Ruiru, Kiambu County were thwarted by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Tuesday, October 22.

DCI sleuths arrested the four suspects as they were in the process of trying to steal from a Barclays Bank ATM in the town.

Hillary Ng'eno, 37, of KK Security at Runda, 31-yr-old Jared Nyang'au a G4S guard in Ruiru, Douglas Momanyi, 34, a bodaboda operator and 43-yr-old Jacob Barasa were caught red-handed in the swift operation.

The four were ambushed by the detectives at the scene after several attempts to retrieve money from the ATM failed.

The detectives also seized a mobile phone, a nylon bag, and a motorcycle from the scene.

"A mobile phone they were using to make contact with a source, a nylon sack they were to use in loading the money and a motorcycle they were to flee on are among the seized items," the DCI posted on Twitter.

The four suspects were taken to custody as the DCI conducted further investigations.

This came only two days after the detectives on Sunday, October 20, arrested Robert Mwaura Mwita in Thika whom they revealed was a suspect in various cases of mobile money fraud.

Mwaura is said to have been working in collaboration with bank security guards manning ATMs to con unsuspecting Kenyans.

The suspect would pretend to be a mobile-money service agent offering help to customers and secure withdrawal codes that he would then send to the ATM security guards to withdraw thereafter split the cash.
