West Pokot Governor John Krop Lonyangapuo was feted with an award in New York, for his exemplary performance in matters concerning women's health and wellness.
Lonyangapuo posted on his social media accounts on Wednesday, October 23, that he had been the recipient of the Saving Mothers Service Award, a recognition given by a body of international doctors dedicated to improving maternal services in developing countries and hardship regions, where it would be otherwise difficult to access such services.
"I am elated today after receiving Saving Mothers Service Award in New York, the USA for extraordinary service, leadership, and devotion to women's health and for improving access to health services at Kapenguria County Referral Hospital," he wrote.
The doctors' body, headed by Dr Terane Shazarian, the founder of Saving Mothers, who is also an associate professor at New York State University, had pitched camp at Kapenguria County Referral Hospital in West Pokot, during their recent tour in April 2019.
While there, they participated in the launch of a maternal care program that specialized in providing free ultrasounds and training to underprivileged women, as well as explaining the importance of giving birth in hospitals.
Their 2019 visit earned Governor Lonyangapuo the Saving Mothers' Service Award.
"Saving mothers acknowledged that since 2016, they have been coming to West Pokot annually but during the 2019 visit, they were impressed by the progress at Kapenguria County Referral Hospital including cleanliness and establishment of a reproductive theatre specifically for women," he informed.
Lonyangapuo stated that apart from the personal award he had received, other health facilities in the region were also recognized for their impressive progress since their launch.
"Kanyarkwat and Sebit Health Centres have been identified as centres of excellence in training rural birth attendants. These trainings are fully sponsored by the Saving Mothers Team in USA," he wrote.
"I am grateful to Saving Mothers organization for the immense support they are according to West Pokot. My government remains steadfast in ensuring residents get quality services in all our health facilities," he stated.
