Kenyan National Union of Teachers Secretary General Wilson Sossion on October 24, 2019, devised a new way to ensure he retains his seat.
The embattled union leader called a presser and announced the postponement of the Annual Delegates Conference (ADC), which is the only forum where he can be voted out of office.
In a video shared by Daily Nation, Sossion, who was accompanied by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli indefinitely postponed the conference that was to be held in December 2019.
"We know the delegates and the branches were looking forward to another delegates conference in December, but this will not be possible for us and therefore, we have postponed it indefinitely," Sossion announced.
He further went on to announce that the union was not prepared to hold the ADC both in terms of resources and many other ways.
Sossion also announced that all other meetings that would have risen from the ADC were also postponed until 2020 when he and his team would communicate to the delegates.
Suppose the delegates meeting was held and he was voted out, a National Executive Council meeting would swear in a new head. The union boss' October 24 announcement effectively reduced any chance of his removal or replacement.
"This does not mean that business has stopped, the national steering committee has the capability and ability to undertake the business of teachers," he said affirmatively.
The nominated MP has been under fire since August 30, when KNUT NEC tried to replace him with his deputy, Hesbon Otieno despite a court order stopping the same.
On Friday September 27, the court overruled the NEC's decision by reinstating Sossion and allowing him to serve both as the union’s boss and as nominated MP.
