Uhuru's Childhood Photos Resurface on His Birthday

President Uhuru Kenyatta on October 26 celebrated his 58th birthday. He was born to Kenya's first President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and Mama Ngina in 1961 at the Aga Khan Hospital.

Kenyans and leaders alike joined in wishing the head of state a happy and prosperous 58th birthday.

He was named 'Uhuru' by retired President Mwai Kibaki, which is a Swahili term for freedom in anticipation of Kenya's 1964 independence.

Uhuru, just like any other ordinary kid, had childhood photos of him archived. They were taken on various occasions throughout Uhuru's adventures and experiences as a child and a teenager.

One of the photos that resurfaced on his birthday was of him celebrating as a child.

In an interview with Daniel Ndambuki alias "Churchill" in November 2011, the head of state revealed that he actually did not grow up in State House, as many would perceive.

Former CBK Governor Duncan Ndegwa once recalled that Mzee Kenyatta believed that the house on the hill was haunted and also never slept inside during his 15-year rule.

Uhuru recalled that his family lived in Gatundu and as a result, he relished every moment he had to go to State House.

While he was never caned by his parents, he was the recipient of corporal punishment at St Marys School, as Jimmy Kibaki disclosed during the funeral of former First Lady Lucy Kibaki in 2016.

However, as son of the president at the time, Uhuru did get to visit exclusive places as well as interact with leaders from within the country and from around the world.
