Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi on Friday, November 8, aired his frustrations over the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report in an event attended by Deputy President William Ruto.
While addressing the graduates at the 3rd graduation ceremony of the Meru National Polytechnic, North Imenti, Meru County, the Jubilee governor stated that the premature conclusions over the BBI report were unwarranted.
Conveying that he had been following the developments in Nairobi where different factions had already been engaging in debates over the yet-to-be-released document, Kiraitu maintained that they would not allow anyone to make the decision for the county.
"We will sit down and analyse what is the best in the interest of Meru without pressure. We will decide as the leadership of Meru what is in the best interests of our people.
Seemingly referencing to Ruto and the Tanga Tanga camp, Kiraitu stated, "I have been around for very long in politics. I know East from West. So tuheshimiwe (We demand our respect)."
On another note, Murungi further stated the core function of institutions was to empower our people by instilling skills that were marketable.
"I advised our people to be very selective about the courses they choose. They should identify the ones that can help them transform society. We have to link our education back to society by identifying the skills the society need," he stated.
On his part, Ruto steered clear of politics addressing the importance of education in the development agenda of the country.
"We are revitalising and upscaling technical and vocational education to train competent and entrepreneurial workforce; churn out innovators, thinkers, and progressives with fresh eyes and a transformative attitude to propel our growth," he stated.
He stated that the orientation to competency-based training was yielding results with the World Bank picking The Meru National Polytechnic, Kisumu National Polytechnic and Kenya Coast National Polytechnic in a Ksh6-billion financial deal that would drive the Big Four, Vision 2030 and support regional integration.
Ruto promised to install street lighting along the Meru-Kambakia road and along the bypass near the school which would ensure there was adequate security for students.
