Egyptian Govt Handpicks Kenyan Journalist for Top Award

NTV's renowned sports journalist Idah Waringa was on Monday, November 11, 2019, was chosen by the Egyptian government to receive the Excellence Award for Young African Journalists in Sports.

Egypt's Ministry of Youth and Sports picked Ms Waringa due to her unwavering dedication to sports journalism, as well as her unique view on sports-related issues affecting society.

An ecstatic Waringa took to her Twitter account to celebrate having bagged one of the continent's most coveted awards in sports journalism.

"Trust the process. Trust God. As Biggie once said, it was all a dream," she tweeted in reference to American rapper Christopher Wallace's song Juicy

Kenyans shared congratulatory messages and words of encouragement with her online. 

"Congratulations my favourite sports journalist. You are more than worth it," Ian Okonu posted on Ms Waringa's page.

"Well done and congratulations Idah...keep up the good work," another user named Gerald Chege tweeted.

Her award comes hot on the heels of yet another NTV journalist - Rose Wangui, who bagged the prestigious Knight International Journalism Award on Sunday, November 10, 2019.

Speaking at the elegant event held in Washington DC, the veteran journalist stated that she would keep using her platform to give a voice to the less fortunate.

Ms Waringa is among a handful of Kenyan women journalists who are making history in the previously male-dominated field of sports journalism.

On December 9, 2018, Waringa emerged as the winner of the Chairman’s Award for Best Inspirational Kenyan Story for her short film Acakoro: From Grass to Grace.
