Govt Hikes Fuel Prices in Latest Announcement

The government, through the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), on Thursday, November 14, announced an increase in fuel prices to take effect from November 15, to December 14, 2019.

Having taken into account the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, EPRA increased the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices across the country, compared to the previous one-month period.

"The changes in the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices in Nairobi are as follows: Super Petrol, Diesel and kerosene increased by Ksh 2.54 per litre, Ksh 2.65 and Ksh 2.98 per litre respectively," read an excerpt from the authority's statement.

The pump prices are inclusive of 8% Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2018 and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 109 of July 9, 2019.

EPRA attributed the changes in prices to the average landed cost of imported Super Petrol increasing by 0.86% in October 2019, diesel increasing by 2.08% and kerosene moving up by 2.73% during the same period.

"The authority wishes to assure the public of its continued commitment to the observance of fair competition and protection of the interests of both consumers and investors in the energy sector," read an excerpt of the energy regulator's press release.

The latest prices came as a shock to Kenyans after the energy regulator's director Pavel Oimeke on Wednesday, October 30, stated that the regulator would reduce the pipeline tariffs which determine the pricing of fuel
