Jubilee Governor Grilled by EACC Over Ksh200M Scandal

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos spent most of his Thursday, November 14, morning at the Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission (EACC) headquarters in Nairobi being grilled over a Ksh200 million scandal.

According to Citizen TV reporter Makori Ongechi, the governor who spent more than three hours at the EACC had been summoned in connection to a fuel tender awarded to his companies and companies associated with him.

KBC reported that the anti-graft agency had summoned Tolgos over allegations of irregularities, bribery, conflict of interest and abuse of office in the award of the Ksh200 million fuel supply tender.

When the county head left the building he addressed the media denying any involvement in embezzlement of public funds.

“I have come to give my side of the story. The supply was Ksh.742,760 to the department of health. The fuel was supplied to the county ambulances and health facilities”  Tolgos told reporters.

The governor though admitted to having been a dealer for a major oil distributor but claimed that he stopped the business after joining politics.

“I used to be a dealer for Oil Libya but I don't own anything in the company now,” he added.

In the summon, EACC Chief Executive Twalib Mbarak noted that the commission had been conducting investigations into allegations of procurement irregularities in the devolved unit during the 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 financial years.

Detectives were also said to be looking into claims that senior county government officials had been awarding contracts worth millions of shillings to companies associated with themselves.
