Uhuru Takes Action After Deadly Landslide

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday, November 23, took action after 37 people were reported to have lost their lives in a massive landslide in West Pokot County.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, the president stated that he had directed the deployment of resources including rescue personnel from our various security and humanitarian agencies, among them the Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service and Special Programmes to the affected region.

The team would help provide mitigative action against further loss of lives. 

Further, he directed regional commissioners in flood and landslide-prone regions to work closely with the security and humanitarian teams to ensure that citizens in these areas are urgently moved to safer grounds.

The head of state also sent his condolence message to the families of those who had lost their kin.

"My thoughts and prayers and those of our entire nation are with families, friends and relatives of those who lost their beloved ones in the unfortunate incident. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

"To those who were injured in the calamitous incident and are receiving treatment in different hospitals, I pray for your quick recovery and restoration," his statement read.

He went ahead and assured the families of those who were yet to be found, that the on-going multi-agency rescue operation would continue until every missing person was accounted for.

On Saturday morning, the country woke up to the sad news that tens of people had been buried alive after a night of heavy downpour.

At the time of publishing this article, 37 people had been confirmed dead.
