Digital strategist Dennis Itumbi, on Tuesday, November 26, was on the wrong end of sustained attacks by Kenyans, after he shared a message on his social media platforms soliciting support for victims of the tragic West Pokot landslide.
Kenyans tore into Itumbi after he shared a Paybill number meant for the West Pokot emergency fund.
"Here is the Pay Bill number for West Pokot emergency, if you can, kindly, help a brother, a sister, a father and a mother, with a little strength to survive. Pay Bill: 721222 Account number: Your name," he tweeted.
However, a discrepancy between the number he provided and the one provided by the County Government of West Pokot, did not go unnoticed by hawk-eyed netizens.
Kenyans.co.ke has since established that the actual paybill number shared by West Pokot acting County Secretary John Karamunya was 711222.
West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo, had on Monday, November 25 issued a plea to well-wishers to share what they could spare, assuring them that the funds would be directed towards rescue efforts.
A spot check of the number shared by Itumbi revealed that the erroneous payment number belonged to Countylink Connections Ikinga Shopping Centre in Kitui County.
"We see you have changed the paybill to 721222. I smell something. Amend or we are not boarding," Robinson Shimalla told Itumbi.
A section of netizens also wondered why taxpayers were being asked to contribute to the emergency.
"We are broke!!! Kenyans are broke! The government has already stole alot and enough from us. Let them use the money allocated for disasters in the budget to help the victims," Cassidy Olwal posted.
