Maina Kageni’s Harrowing Experience From Past Employer

Popular radio host Maina Kageni on November 26, 2019, told a story of harrowing experiences he had while working in the United Kingdom.

During the morning show, Maina And King’ang’i on Classic 105, Maina spoke of the many instances of bullying that he had to go through, but couldn’t quit for lack of another job.

"My supervisor used to bully me when I was in the UK. I couldn't walk away because I needed the job and I was in a foreign county," he recalled.

"I was insulted every day but I needed the job. There was nothing I could have done. The Chinese man would often call me 'stupid [expletive]'...' you [expletives] will never learn!" added Maina.

Being in a foreign country, he had no option but to suffer silently in the hands of the oppressive employers.

"There was no one to go to because the bosses were two Chinese brothers. What would you go and tell the brother?" further remarked Maina.

His story brought life to a highly lit conversation as callers talked about their painful experiences too.

A caller remarked, "A lot has to be done. As a company, take these managers for training because they need that managerial skill in order to lead.”

“I had one who used to steal money from my till and at end month all is deducted from my salary. I cursed her and my tears finally caught up with her! You can't steal what I've sweat for and life becomes good for you,” Monique Kimmss commented on Twitter.

Janet Wandia wrote “Mine is not a bully but a pretender. He bites at the same time blows the wound, but I thank God for what he is about to do, for fools don’t last long. The battle is not mine. I keep the faith.”

“I have faced personal harassment where my boss used to offer me inappropriate comments, offensive jokes, critical remarks, ostracizing behaviours, intimidation tactics and this created an intimidating and offensive work environment for me, I had to quit,” wrote Samuel Kareithi.

“If a supervisor notes your desperation level, he can manipulate you like a puppet, moving on is the solution, no human is limited,” advised Peter Kago.

Cases of harassment at job places are not new, the most recent being an incident that took place at Eastmatt Supermarket, Kajiado Branch, where a supervisor by the name Ibrahim Taraiya was captured by CCTV cameras assaulting a cashier, Sara Atieno at the place of work.

On November 25, the Kajiado High Court ordered that Taraiya be held until December 6, when he shall appear in court for the mentioning of the case.

The suspect was re-arrested on November 26 after being released from the police cells on November 20, after Sara dropped charges against him.
