Kenyatta's Minister Who Stabbed Colleague at Party Over Woman

Everyone has a chapter in their life that they wish never to revisit again but for one cabinet minister in the Jomo Kenyatta's regime, some of his lowest moments in life are published in the media and will forever be available.

A 2017 profile from The Standard detailed how former Lands Minister, the late Paul Ngei lost his chance to complete his studies after he was involved in a violent altercation at Makerere University.

The story revealed that the cabinet minister, who was a student at the institution from 1948–1950, got carried away at a party in Uganda that ended tragically.

The politician is said to have stabbed a colleague after they fell out over a woman he was seeing, an action that led to his expulsion from the institution.

He was studying journalism in the institution at the time.

A few years later, the former minister who was among Jomo Kenyatta's inner circle, would develop a conundrum with the founding president after he attempted to seduce his daughter Margaret Kenyatta while the two were serving time.

When Ngei and Mzee were imprisoned at Kapenguria, they both wrote to Margaret often and one day their letters were mixed up and Kenyatta got a hold of what Ngei had penned Margaret.

According to Kenyatta's biographer, Jeremy Murray-Brown, Ngei was complaining about the prison's maddening solitude in the intercepted letter.

Brown described the communication as "Flowery, passionate and full of neat Kiswahili phrases."

Kenyatta then confronted Ngei and joked about him being in a relationship with his daughter.

"What are you going to say now. I’ve caught you, ehee! You’ve kept mum for a long time and you are a son-in-law... and never said a thing,” Mzee quipped.

Kenyatta didn't seem to mind because the relationship between him and Ngei did not change.

In 1978, the politician's name also featured prominently in the mysterious death of Captain Judy Angaine, the daughter of fellow cabinet minister the late Jackson Angaine, whom he was rumoured to be dating.

A report by The Standard indicated that Angaine had gone to visit his father on the night of March 29 when Ngei offered to buy her drinks that evening.

The two were confronted by a man identified as Maj Kisila who was alleged to be Angaine's boyfriend before the two (Ngei and Angaine), left for a club in Lang'ata.

The report further noted that on their way back, Ngei reportedly made advances to her and the confrontation that ensued shortly after led their car to roll three times. The next day, Judy was found dead.
