County Commissioner Arrests Deputy After Drunk Driving

Buuri Deputy County Commissioner Peter Jumwa on Tuesday, November 26, had to cool his heels inside a police cell after he was nabbed in Kiirua Town driving his official vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

According to a report by Daily Nation, members of the public called Meru County Commissioner Allan Machari who then ordered the arrest.

“County Commissioner Allan Machari received information of the misconduct of the DCC and that he was driving around the township in a government Toyota Land Cruiser caravan while drunk.”

“He will be charged with the offence of driving under the influence of alcohol,” the newspaper reported.

The DCC wasn't charged in court as the case had been referred to the national government coordination department.

After Jumwa's release, he was driven to his home by a police officer.

“It is true he was arrested and released but the issue is now being handled by the department charged with issues of administration,” a junior officer told the media.

The NMG publication further cited a police report, that claimed Jumwa was found without his designated driver.

It was further reported that the administrator was subjected to a breathalyser test before being locked up.

Speaking on Wednesday, November 27, the DCC confirmed that he had indeed been arrested but claimed that the issue had been resolved.

“Yes, it happened yesterday. It is settled. That was a personal issue but it has been resolved,” he stated.
