Inside DP Ruto's High-Profile Lawyer's Trail-blazing Career

One of Deputy President William Ruto's closest aides behind the curtains goes by the name of Abraham Kipkorir Sing'oei, the legal advisor in his office.

The tough legal mind joined DP Ruto's team in 2014, barely a year after he ascended to the top office alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta, and has been there ever since.

His profile on the DP's website reveals that he holds two Masters degrees, one in International Law and Economics from the University of Minnesota Law School, USA, where he was a Fulbright scholar in 2007/8, and a Master of Laws in Comparative Human Rights Systems from the  University of Pretoria Center for Human Rights, South Africa.

He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Nairobi (class of 1998) and proceeded to the Kenya School of Law (KSL) and graduated in 1999.

Sing'oei is a member of the Law Society of Kenya and has sat in the membership of the International Commission of Jurists – Africa Section, and has a membership in the American Society of International Law.

He is also an associate member of the prestigious American Bar Association, one of the world's largest voluntary professional organizations, with over 400,000 members and more than 3500 different entities.

Sing’oei has served as a research fellow at the Advocates for Human Rights in Minneapolis and at the Centre for Justice and International Law in Washington DC.

He is the director of SMS advocates, a law firm operating from I&M towers on Ngong Avenue, Nairobi.

The first case the legislator won was an indigenous rights case in 2010 before the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights when he represented the Endorois’ community.

Before his stint with the deputy president, Sing'oei served as the Litigation Director, Katiba Institute, Rule of Law Specialist at the US Agency for International Development and founding director, Centre for Minority Rights Development (Cemiride), a pan-African non-profit organization.

Sing'oei tried his hands in politics by running on a Jubilee ticket as the MP for Kwanza in Transzoia county in 2017, but lost to Ford Kenya's Ferdinand Wanyonyi.
