The government, through the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), on Saturday, December 14, announced a decrease in fuel prices, to take effect from December 15, to January 14, 2020.
“Having taken into account the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, the changes in the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices in Nairobi are as follows: super petrol, diesel and kerosene decreases by Ksh1.09, Ksh2.83 and Ksh1.75 per litres respectively.
“Super petrol, diesel and kerosene will now retail at Ksh109.50, Ksh101.78 and Ksh102.31 respectively in Nairobi starting midnight,” read the statement from EPRA.
The pump prices are inclusive of 8 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2018 and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 109 of July 9, 2019.
“EPRA has also calculated the maximum wholesale prices of petroleum products in line with the Petroleum Act, 2019.
"The authority wishes to assure the public of its continued commitment to the observance of fair competition and protection of the interests of both consumers and investors in the energy sector," further read an excerpt of the energy regulator's press release.
On November 14, EPRA announced an increase in fuel prices that took effect from November 15 to December 14, 2019.
The prices of super petrol, diesel and kerosene increased by Ksh 2.54 per litre, Ksh 2.65 and Ksh 2.98 per litre respectively, leading to more pain at the pump for Kenyans.
The latest prices come as a reprieve to Kenyans, especially during the festive season which involves a lot of travelling.
